gray heads and the anti-Scott McCloud

Some recent notebook drawings…

And then there’s this new project I’m working on. Basically, I’ve been keeping notes for an imagined book, The Comic Creator’s Handbook, a kind of writing handbook, like the Bedford, but for comics. Maybe I’ll still do it some day, but with books like Making Comics, Drawing Words & Writing Pictures, and Ivan Brunetti’s Cartooning I feel like there’s less of a need. But I have a lot of notes on idas that the aforementioned books don’t refer to. So I have devised a way to bring up those ideas while not having to talk about things the other books have mentioned and to have something fun to write because of the added layer of character. Hence: How to Draw Comics the Right Way. This is just the first page. I’m trying to work things out still, like the look and the tone, but the basic idea here is that the “narrator” is the reverse polarity version of Scott McCloud. But I want it to be more than a parody. I’m planning to offer actual, usable advice. And insult everyone in the process.

I can’t raise my hand; I’m too busy grading.
