About:
This appeared in Litmus Test 10, October 2000.
Like "Holiday Phone-Call," this story just appeared in my head one day around the time I was doing "The Masked Ball." I had a strong narrative roadmap in my head with definite plot milestones that I had to get to, but I let the specificity of the drawing take over. The reality of ink on paper began to supercede my initial ideas, began to demand things of the story. So some things that I originally had in mind didn't appear in the final version, while other stuff crept in. Committing myself to doing this as a silent story provided a great challenge, especially the auction scene.
I've received a lot of mixed responses to this story. Some people were turned off by the fantastical aspects. Others were made uneasy because they saw Kit as representing some kind of "third" sex (and those who knew me and thought Kit was my stand-in were even more perplexed). And others saw the story as an example of compassionate detachment in action.
